The Carry-On Challenge: How I Survived 10 Days in Italy With Just One Bag

Published:

Hey there, it’s Hannah!

A few years back, I shared how I managed to pack for a 7-day trip to Spain using only a carry-on—and honestly, I thought that was my peak packing achievement. But apparently, I love a challenge, because this time, I upped the ante: 10 days in Italy, three cities, and still just one carry-on.

Was it a little insane? Maybe.
Was it worth it? Absolutely.

Here’s why I did it—and how you can, too.

Why One Bag?

Let’s be real: Nobody loves lugging around a giant suitcase. Between cobblestone streets, crowded trains, and budget airline layovers, checking a bag is basically asking for stress. Here’s why I committed to the carry-on life:

No lost luggage nightmares (because airlines love misplacing bags).
Easy transfers—no waiting at baggage claim = more time for espresso and sightseeing.
Forced minimalism (aka no overpacking five “just in case” outfits I’ll never wear).

The Strategy: Pack Smarter, Not More

1. The Right Bag Matters

I went with a hard-shell spinner carry-on (max dimensions for most airlines) and a roomy tote as my personal item. The key? Packing cubes. They compress clothes like magic and keep everything organized.

2. The Capsule Wardrobe Formula

I stuck to a neutral color palette (black, white, tan) with a few statement accessories to switch things up. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 4 tops (mix of tees and blouses)
  • 2 bottoms (1 jeans, 1 lightweight trousers)
  • 1 dress (dresses up or down)
  • 1 jacket (denim or blazer, depending on season)
  • 2 shoes (walkable sneakers + 1 dressier pair)
  • Scarf (doubles as a blanket for flights)

Pro Tip: Roll, don’t fold. It saves space and minimizes wrinkles.

3. Toiletries: The TSA-Friendly Edit

  • Mini everything (3 oz or less, in a clear bag).
  • Solid shampoo bar (lifesaver for liquid limits).
  • Multi-use products (tinted moisturizer with SPF, lip/cheek stain).

4. The Extras That Earned Their Spot

  • Foldable tote (for souvenirs or beach days).
  • Portable charger (because Google Maps drains batteries fast).
  • Crossbody bag (theft-proof and hands-free for exploring).

The Reality Check

Did I rewear outfits? Yes.
Did I miss having more options? Sometimes.
Was it worth the trade-off? 100%.

Not worrying about heavy bags or lost luggage made the trip so much smoother—and honestly, nobody notices (or cares) if you repeat outfits.

Could You Do It?

If you’re a chronic overpacker, start small:

  1. Try a weekend trip with just a carry-on first.
  2. Stick to a color scheme so everything mixes and matches.
  3. Embrace laundry (many hotels/Airbnbs have machines).

Trust me, once you experience the freedom of one-bag travel, you’ll never go back.
